(January 6, 2014—Minneapolis, Minn.) – Greater Public announced the election today of three new members to its board of directors – a move that supports the organization’s evolution of services and expanded focus on behalf of public media stations. The new directors are Ken Ikeda, Managing Director, Public Radio Capital; Kliff Kuehl, President & CEO, Kansas City Public Television; and Quyen Shanahan, Associate General Manager, WXPN, Philadelphia.
Greater Public is the premiere development and fundraising organization in public media, providing essential tools that sustain and grow station revenue. This year the group announced its intent to provide increased public television services and innovative digital expertise as it helps stations succeed in a changing media landscape. Greater Public’s new directors bring deep insight and critical expertise to these goals.
Greater Public board chair and Head of Strategy & Partnerships for Krista Tippett Public Productions Mikel Ellcessor noted, “Ikeda, Kuehl and Shanahan each bring a unique range of skills and talents to the board. All three are great strategic thinkers and skilled collaborators that believe in Greater Public’s vision for serving local stations.”
Ikeda has a broad range of non-profit executive and board experience, including four years as the executive director of the Bay Area Video Coalition (BAVC). In his current role at Public Radio Capital, he is helping to reshape public media’s business model to increase its reach and impact in local communities.
Well-respected in public television circles, Kuehl is a proven leader who has helped consolidate the Kansas City public media landscape and create an interactive digital news hub for multimedia and multiplatform projects. Kuehl also serves on the Public Media Business Association (PMBA) board.
Under Shanahan’s fundraising leadership, WXPN has grown to be one of the most financially successful AAA stations in public radio. Her accomplishments include launching the station’s online presence, its membership program, and wrapping up its $6 million Campaign for the Music, raising funds for programming, new technology, strategic investment and community outreach programs.
Ikeda, Kuehl and Shanahan join other public media leaders on the Greater Public board, including Mikel Ellcessor, Head of Strategy & Partnerships, Krista Tippett Public Productions, Minneapolis; Paul Jacobs, Vice President/General Manager, Jacobs Media, Detroit; Robin Turnau, President of Vermont Public Radio; Don Derheim, Chief Executive Officer, SFJAZZ, San Francisco; Yvette Cook, Senior Vice President/Chief Marketing Officer, United Way of Greater Atlanta; Norm Silverstein, President & CEO of WXXI Public Broadcasting/Rochester, New York; and Connie Walker, General Manager, WUNC, Chapel Hill, NC.
Based in Minneapolis, Greater Public serves over 260 member stations and produces the Public Media Development and Marketing Conference each July. The company merged with the Integrated Media Association (iMA) in September, uniting two of public media’s premiere resources for innovation and sustainability.
