Janelle Monáe, who plays The Uptown tonight as part of “The Electric Lady” tour, sat down with 90.9 The Bridge’s Jon Hart to talk about what it means to be performing in her hometown, science fiction and Gates Bar B.Q.
Growing up in Kansas City, Kansas, Monáe cultivated her personal style shopping in Westport and developing her talent for writing and performing with the support of her family, teachers and organizations like The Coterie before leaving to study musical theater in New York.
Monáe has since performed all over the world, including at The White House and at George Lucas’ wedding at The Skywalker Ranch outside San Francisco. She’s also collaborated with a variety of other artists.
She says she’s passionate about youth thinking globally and having opportunities to study the performing arts and learn about the world outside their hometown.
