The Kansas City Jazz Orchestra is a 17-piece big band, formed in 2003, comprised of some of the city’s top musicians who come together four or five times a year to play concerts at the Kauffman Center. One of the ways the Jazz Orchestra is working with the next generation is to spotlight them when they can. For the all-Ellington show on May 9, they’ll be preceded onstage by students from the Metropolitan Jazz Ensemble under the direction of Clarence Smith. They also sponsor a summer jazz camp featuring players like Doug Talley, Rod Fleeman and the great keyboardist Everette DeVann. It’s June 2-6 at Kansas City Kansas Community College.
