Overview
Sandra Campbell becomes a “person from the past” as she portrays Bessie Coleman in four time periods: Bessie’s early years (approx. time code 01:00:00-27:00), the years in Chicago (TC 27:00-39:00), the time in Europe (TC 39:00-43:00), and finally as a licensed pilot in the United States (TC 43:00-57:00). Throughout the presentation Bessie encourages students to “follow your dream, don’t take ‘no’ for an answer, and every ‘no’ puts you closer to a ‘yes’”. The program lends itself to use as a biographical sketch of an African-American woman, and also establishes Bessie as a role model for students as they encounter challenges in their lives and to encourage young women to pursue math and science careers. This program is suggested for use with middle grade students.

Suggestions for classroom use:
Follow Your Dreams is most effectively used with students when the teacher:
•provides previewing activities
•shows the video in small segments with frequent stops to check for comprehension and to direct student viewing.
•provides follow-up activities with real-world applications
