This year marks historic anniversaries for some key federal initiatives, including Medicare and the Americans with Disabilities Act. That list is not complete, however, without recognizing that this year also marks the 50th anniversary of the Head Start program. Launched as part of President Lyndon Johnson’s War on Poverty, the program promotes school readiness for children in low-income families by offering educational, nutritional, health, social, and other services. KCPT examines the program’s impact in the Kansas City area, with assistance from the Mid-America Regional Council, which is coordinating a profile series of local people impacted by Head Start.
