This May, KCPT and the Martha Speaks Reading Buddies program is completing another successful year.
The program uses 4th graders as mentors to 1st graders as they work together to learn new words and how they are used. Currently, KCPT brings the program to seven elementary schools across the Kansas City Public School District.
This year, there were 329 Little Buddies mentored by 351 Big Buddies. Together, they watched episodes of Martha Speaks, wrote in their journals, worked on activities that encourage learning new words and how to use them in sentences, and read books that were related to the program. Both Little and Big Buddies received books to take home and continue to work on reading.
Over the last 5 years, KCPT has brought the program to 31 high-needs schools in the metropolitan area and has served 3, 360 Little and Big Buddies, and distributed 21,440 books.
We extend a special thank you for support from the George K. Baum Family Foundation, Hallmark Corporate Foundation and DST.
