BY THE PEOPLE: The Future of Transit in Kansas CityDid you know that for the past 8 weeks, a national polling firm has been working the phones, randomly selecting 100 metro Kansas City residents to take part in a remarkable experiment in democracy? What would you say if a pollster called you at home and offered to pay you $75 to spend a day tackling some of the biggest and thorniest issues surrounding transit in Kansas City? Would you even go? Find out what happens this Friday night at 7:30 pm in BY THE PEOPLE: The Future of Transit in Kansas City. BY THE PEOPLE is a national project of MacNeil/Lehrer productions, makers of the PBS Newshour. It's focused on getting average citizens talking about critical community questions. THE PESKY PROBLEM OF TRANSITYou've no doubt seen the recent headlines. Kansas City Mayor Mark Funkhouser declares the Chastain Light-Rail plan dead. He meets with area mayor to push for a regional plan. But just because Mayor Funkhouser wants a regional solution to the light rail question, will metro area residents be willing to dip into their pocketbooks to pay for it? The citizens participating in BY THE PEOPLE are not your usual suspects. They have been randomly chosen to truly reflect the political, geographic, socio-economic and ethnic make-up of the metro. To inform their conversation, citizen participants receive ISSUE and VIDEO backgrounders explaining the choices Kansas City leaders now face. From the current status of the Clay Chastain light rail plan to continuing efforts to find a regional transit solution. They also get to ask questions of a private "think tank of experts." How do our citizens weigh up the issue? Watch BY THE PEOPLE: The Future of Transit in KC, Friday at 7:30 pm on KCPT.
