The Palavras

The Palavras escaped to the United States during the Bosnian Conflict in 1995. This Conflict has been referred to as one of the most devastating genocidal wars since World War II. Due to their Catholic background, their lives were in danger.

Danijel (son), who was born blind and Marina (mother) were able to escape through a humantarian organization, Celebrate the Children, and came to the United States where Danijel underwent 12 hours of surgery to restore his vision.

During this time, the Borders of Bosnia were closed and Brankica (daughter) and her father, Vlado had to flee to Croatia with the help of the American Embassy. They then escaped to the US with Croatian passports and have remained here for the past 9 years.

Since then the family has begun a new life in Kansas City. They are awaiting their final appeal for citizenship, which will be determined in June 2004.
