The Stolyarsky Family

Viktor, Nadya and Oleg Stolyarsky came to the U.S. from the Ukraine in 2003. They came for three reasons: 1) because his daughter, son-in-law and grandchildren live in Kansas City; 2) because his son, Oleg, wanted a future for himself; 3) and because the family felt persecution from extremists who hated Jews.

Both he and his wife have spent 25 years in the engineering field. Viktor worked as an engineer in electrical substations, while Nadya designed thermal power nuclear power plants. Oleg, 25, went to the university in Kiev and studied engineering, however he doesn't anticipate using those skills here in the U.S. Currently he is delivering pizzas for Pizza Hut.

Nadya is studying English at Donnelly college. Viktor had been, but working nights and going to school in the day became too difficult for him, especially while searching for other jobs. Instead, he learns English from listening to the television.

They hope to become citizens in five years.
