Local Hostility over Obamacare
Less than a week before millions of Americans currently without health insurance are eligible to enroll in new health exchanges as part of the Affordable Care Act, here in our area, some elected leaders are bending over backwards to discredit the program. Missouri Lt. Governor Peter Kinder is calling on Missourians not to sign up and to actively resist the law. Meanwhile, in Kansas, Lt. Governor Jeff Colyer is complaining that the new health care exchanges are not competitive enough.
Inside the White House Mental Health Summit in KC
Even though it was a gorgeous 79 degrees last Saturday and there were so many other things going on in our metro, including the Plaza Art Fair, more than 350 people gathered at the downtown Marriott to participate in the White House Summit on Mental Health. Kansas City was one of 10 cities selected to host the citizen conversations. In attendance was the nation’s Health Secretary Kathleen Sebelius and our two Kansas City Mayor’s Sly James and Mark Holland.
Missouri Education Chief recommends against accreditation
The fate of the Kansas City, MO School District hangs in the balance again. This week, Missouri’s top school official recommends against providing accreditation to the district which recently was celebrating improved test scores. State Education Commissioner Chris Nicastro says sustained growth over multiple years needs to be achieved before she’s willing to recommend restoring her stamp of approval on the KCMO district.

The penguins have arrived. At least the first of several dozen that will inhabit the Kansas City’s Zoo new $15 million Helzberg Penguin Plaza scheduled to open in late October.
