Columnist Steve Rose counsels Missourians to be patient in the so-called “Border War” with Kansas. Rose claims the tax-cutting fanaticism of Governor Brownback coupled with the budget-cutting fanaticism of ultra-conservatives will cause Kansas to buckle. All Missourians need do is practice patience.
In a recent column, Yael writes that Kansas Citians were not told the whole truth about the Power and Light District’s finances. Projections were that the total debt would be about 490 million; new revenue would total 506 million. Taxpayers would see a “profit” on the deal.
“ADAPTING” TO EVOLUTION AND OTHER CHANGES
On an 8-2 vote, the Kansas Board of Education has approved new science teaching standards that include instruction in evolution and climate change. While some on the board object, the real battle now seems to be between the board majority and more conservative members of the state legislature. The issue is the adoption of “Common Core,” described as multi-state teaching guidelines.
MR. MAYOR AND CEO?
There’s speculation that the Kansas City Charter Review Commission will recommend the adoption of a strong-mayor form of government. The issue could be on the ballot as early as November.
