**First finding out about Pearl Harbor I was on the way home from the movie theater, and there was an extra newspaper on the streets about Pearl Harbor. It just said the Japanese had bombed Pearl Harbor that morning. We all knew it (war) was going to happen eventually, but not that quick. Everybody was expecting it but not expecting it to be just an outright bombing like that, maybe just declaration of war but it didnít happen that way. We werenít quite ready for war, but when it did happen everybody really went all out, cause you were turning out ships and
boats and things, airplanes, as fast as we could go.

Teaching maintenance classes to women?

During the winter break ,we had Red Cross ladies that came to learn about automobiles They had a classóIím not sure anymore how many hours they had to take but seemed like it was 10 or 12 hours of class and they went 2 hours a night. We taught this class at the main high school and just minor things. You couldnít buy cars and you couldnít buy tires. You had to keep up what you had , so they learned to do simple things to their car. How to change their oil, change a flat tire, keep their brakes adjusted, clean their spark plugs, adjust their headlights, replace light bulbs in the cars. Just simple things. The ladies had a good time, and we had a good time teaching them. They all liked to get their hands dirty and they would also have the last day of their class where they had to take a written test of what they had learned and they would bring presents to everybody, little think, little things not. But it was great.

****Story of enlisting in the Navy

I went down to the recruiting office, downtown. You enlisted there and then. You were sent to Leavenworth, Ks. for physicals, overnight, you stayed at Leavenworth. Then you got your papers to go. They give you about a week or two to put any of your affairs in order. Then we went off to Faragut, Idaho.

*** I was assigned to Malaria control unit, because I was a mechanic and I could take care of some of their mechanical problems they had with sprayers and their vehicles. The 512 maintenance Seabees posted a bulletin that they were short of pipe fitters and mechanics so I put in for that job and pretty soon Iím transferred to them. That kinda turned out to be a nice job.
