“The only behavior measure that correlates significantly with reading scores is the number of books in the home. An analysis of a national data set of nearly 100,000 United States school children find that access to printed materials - and not poverty – is the critical variable affecting reading acquisition.” (McQuillan, 1998)
We recognize that there is little we can do to solve the problem of poverty, however we can work diligently to insure that all children have access to books in their home situations through KCPT Reads.
KCPT Reads literacy initiative is based on the same concept and is funded by individual gifts and grants to provide sessions and free books to an extended bi-state community including libraries, well-child clinics, Head Start, school districts, community centers and Parents As Teachers.
Local sessions are held quarterly or monthly at various locations in the metropolitan Kansas City area. With the convergence to digital, the designated channel for Kids Television 19 will all for promotional spots to identify these locations in addition to allowing for broadcast of information about literacy such as tips for parents on reading to your child and the importance of print materials in the home. With this available air time, we will be able to reach many more families to support the most important indicator for academic and school success, READING.
