The Kansas City, Missouri, city council faces a critical vote on the future of Kansas City International. The local firm of Burns & McDonnell offers to finance, design and build a one-terminal airport at no apparent cost to the city. The council is hiring legal counsel to review the plan. There is mixed reaction to the offer from the council and the public. Mayor James wants a council vote by June 15th and a public vote in November. Is this plan on the fast track to success or likely to be derailed? Benefits of plan? Any negatives to the Burns and McDonnell plan? Is this simply an act of civic concern by Burns and McDonnell or a long-term, lucrative financial deal? Or both? Some think others should be given the chance to bid on this project? Are others likely to be willing to privately finance this public project? What if the council rejects the offer? What if the council accepts and the public rejects? Why hire legal counsel? Doesn't city have a legal staff?
Darryl Forte is now the former chief of the Kansas City police department and a search for his successor has begun. In an interview on Ruckus, Councilwoman Alissia Canady, chair of the council public safety committee. said a new chief must have "cultural competence," an awareness of differences in racial and ethnic communities. Obviously, there are many other attributes the police board and the public will need to consider. What should your successors on the police board be looking for in a new chief? Should the new chief come from within the current department or elsewhere? Will the search for a new chief renew the battle over local versus state control of the department? Does a requirement of "cultural competence" suggest the next chief should be a minority? Will Forte's departure cause the police board to tighten regulations that allowed him to accumulate nearly half-a-million dollars in overtime, vacation and compensatory pay. What are the major issues a new chief will face?
President Trump is finishing his first foreign trip since entering the White House. As he returns home he still faces calls for impeachment, the naming of a special counsel and delays in his legislative initiatives. A recent report from Harvard shows major media coverage of Trump's first 100 days in office was 80 percent negative. Will Trump's trip have an impact on how he is viewed by the public and the media? Is it not too early and too unrealistic for some Democrats to call for impeachment? Has Trump blundered too much already to ever redeem his presidency? What's the impact of a special counsel being named? Does it benefit or impede the administration? Will former FBI director Comey's testimony before congress be dispositive? Will Trump's call in Saudi Arabia for Arab/Muslim states to join the battle against extremism be persuasive? Are you surprised by the Harvard findings involving media coverage? Too late for tax reform this year?
